In Patmos revived the custom of shipping the image of the Virgin Mary!
Patmos is well known for its deeply religious character through the Cave of the Apocalypse and the Monastery of St. John Theologian! In mid-August revived a unique custom for the Virgin Mary, which is associated with the religiosity of the island. The Revival of the custom "Escort the image of Our Lady of Crane Patmos with the fishing boats" filled thrill.
The Port Authority came with its own distinctive manner vessels, giving a particular character to the event! The sight of the common course of traditional boats was unique!
On the 15th of August at 4pm, began the escorting of the image from the "Konsolato" of Skala Patmos Port with sailboats and destined for the bay of Panagia Geranou. Artoklasia after Vespers celebrated at 7 pm and ended with the blessing of the grapes. Later locals treated people with traditional products.
The chapel of Panagia Geranou is located on the hill of the same name Patmos area. According to archaeological research at this point was built the present church of the Assumption and St. Juliana, from fishermen and residents of Konsolato Skala Patmos from where one overlooks all the surrounding islands!
The custom began in 1880. As dictated by tradition, the fishermen of Konsolato Skala Patmos area took care of the seats and had custody of the preparation of the celebration in cooperation with the Commission Restoration and Preservation of the Holy Temple.
Previously, due to lack of road the use of the vessel was the only solution to access the area. Today there is a road and this habit has changed as a result we see many wheeled and not so many sailing boats in the area.
It should be noted that the revival of this event was organized by the South Aegean Region and the Association traders Patmos "The Development". The custom helps preserve the art of the shipwright and reinforces the practice of seamanship.
This religious - cultural event is a unique experience not only for locals but also for visitors from the rest of Greece and abroad!
