The fact that the ground of Leros is smooth makes every walking trip really enjoyable. The Municipality managed to give prominence to all significant paths, most of which include signaling and proper kiosks for rest. Apart from their natural and archaeological significance, many paths are related with the island’s military history during the World War II. 

Platanos-castle of Pandeli

You may leave your vehicle in the parking space of Platanos and follow the signposts towards the castle via the fragrant backstreets of the settlement. After passing by the elegant church of Agia Paraskevi that in the past constituted the metropolis of Leros, you should follow the gradual path that ascends among aromatic bushes. When you pass the threshold of the castle, there is a landscape showing that time has stopped a long time ago. Duration without stop: 30’. 


You can start from Lakki and head towards Temenia with the PPC facilities. Then, move to the south and always have on your right the cove of Lepides. Then, you will see the imposing complex of the Psychiatric Hospital, which was initially built in order to shelter the Rosseti hydroplanes base. One of the tow trucks that used to move the hydroplanes out of the sea is still alive. Leave the gate and continue towards Xirokambos. Then, you will find the settlement Sfakia. The asphalt road on your left leads to the mound Tsigkounas, where there are still the military barracks of the battery 113. Immediately after the chapel of Agios Vlasis and the first houses of Xirokambos, there is a sign showing to the direction for Paleokastro. If you go up there, you will see the cyclopean wall, as well as the arched chapel of Panagia. After this detour, continue towards the centre of Xirokambos. Soon, you will reach the church of the village, i.e. the church of Agios Fanourios. There is another path starting from this spot ascending towards the mountain Skoumbarda with the breathtaking sea view. As you go downhill from Xirokambos towards the beach, the road continues to Diapori and the power station FT3. There is an asphalt road up to the church of Panagia Kavouradena. Duration without stop: 2 hours.

Tunnel of Merikia-Profitis Ilias

After having visited the tunnels of the War museum in Merikia, you will pass by the precinct with the decommissioned airplanes and, on your left, up in the mound, you will see the chapel of Agios Zacharias. After that, there is a narrow dirt road that passes by the dam of Sikamia and, then, gets into an area with livestock farms, sheepfolds and pigsties. After half an hour, it reaches a crossroad. The left direction leads to the modest chapel of Profitis Ilias, while the other direction shows the way to the monastery of the nun Gavriilia (Iera Moni Agion Aggelon). Duration: 60.  

Partheni-temple of Artemis-Fakoudia

Start from the dam of Partheni and follow the sign to the archaeological place. You will reach it after ascending 400 m. It is not guarded, as there are only a few hewed stones coming from the sancturary of the Hellenistic period. Continuing to the west, the path becomes steep and you will pass through a land with rush and carob trees. On your right, you can see the coasts of Partheni with the piers and the fishing boats. The trail leads to a stone kiosk in the area Fakoudia, where you can visit the ruins of the battery Farinata. A few meters before the kiosk, there is a south detour (that has a length of 1km) leading to the top of Markelos.   Duration without stop: 50’.

Panagia Kavouradena-Diapori

There is an accessible dirt road starting from the temple of Panagia Kavouradena that continues towards the cape Diapori. The distance does not exceed 1.3km. However, it passes by the cliff edge and you can admire the incredible view not only over the bay of Xirokambos but also to Kalymnos. At the end of the route, there is a kiosk, as well as the buildings of the batteries 281 and 388. In the barracks, wall paintings made by Italian soldiers are still preserved. If you go downhill from this point, you will reach the edge of the cape. Duration without stop: 20’.
