AEGEAN ISLANDS

DIVING ACTIVITY

The magnificent sea around Leros offers a great visibility (even up to 50m) and it includes a rich ecosystem, caves, reefs and shipwrecks. There are private diving centers that can provide you with the appropriate equipment, in order to explore the sea.

In a depth of 20m, near the islet Strongyli, there is a German landing craft of type “H” that is cut in half.

In Partheni, near the cape Korais there is the shipwreck of a Greek barge that was commandeered by the Italians for an antisubmarine war. The shipwreck is adjacent to a pisciculture and the visibility is limited.

On the seabed of the port’s entrance in Lakki, the antisubmarine fishnets wrapped in huge balls still stand placed there by the Italians at the beginning of the World War II, with the intention of protecting their naval base. The most impressive element on the seabed of Lakki is the shipwreck of the legendary torpedo boat destroyer ‘Vasilissa Olga’, at a depth of 30m. It was the pride of the Greek Fleet. It has successfully accomplished hundreds of military missions from the Adriatic Sea to the Indian Ocean. However, in September 1943, it was taken by surprise by a flock of German bomber aircrafts “Ju-88”.

Moreover, on the seabed of the beach Blefoutis, at a depth of 17m, there is the spindle of a Henkell 111 bomber and in the port of Rina, close to the coast, there is the shipwreck of the Italian steamship “Ivorea”.
