AEGEAN ISLANDS

Kimolos

According to an ancient myth, the island was named after Kimolos who was married to Side, the daughter of Taurus. Ptolemy mentions that Kimolos was called “Echinousa” in the past. The numerous urchins (“achinos” in Greek) that lived in the waters around the island could have been the reason for that. It should be noted that urchins are depicted on the bronze coins of the island.
