AEGEAN ISLANDS

Temples

In Fri there is the church of Agios Spyridonas, the patron saint of the island, which was built during the early 20th century, with a fine woodcut iconostasis and an elaborate bell tower with a clock.

In Emporios you can visit the church of Vaftisi tis Theotokou (The Baptism of Mary), built in 1856, which is three-aisled with cobblestone floor, a fine iconostasis and a plaster colored adornment. Behind the church there is the chapel where the icon was found. It is a palaiochristian basilica, whose architectural parts were used to build the church. On the marbled stairs you can see the carvings from its previous use; they could be the stairs of an ancient temple. The baptistery is located in a self-owned space.

In Panagia the woodcut iconostasis and the pebbled floor of the church of Panagia (Virgin Mary) along with the marbled shrine (that seems to be ancient) of Hosia Kassiani in the yard will excite you. In Panagia, you will also see a complex of six churches, located at the highest point of the village. It is dedicated to Agios Charalambos, Agios Antonios, Agia Kara, Agia Varvara, Agios Ioannis and Agios Nikolaos. The so-called Panagia tou Giorgi, also located in Panagia, is cruciform with a dome. It is considered to date back to 1770.

The temple of Panagia tis Potamitissas is located at Arvanitochori and according to tradition, the miraculous icon was found by a shepherd in a cave, who transformed the cave into a chapel. The temple of Agios Dimitrios, in the same village, is remarkable with its three typical arches that form internal bows on the roof, its cobblestone floor found in the garden as well and its fine bell tower.
