Fira

The impressive settlement built along Kaldera is the capital of Thera (the name of the settlement is an alteration of the word Thera) and it is busy throughout the year, since this is the place where Municipality services, public organisations, banks and the market are located. Outside Kaldera, the busiest place is Theotokopoulou Square, next to which you can find the bus terminal and the taxi rank. This square is crossed by 25th Martiou street which leads to Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia (access by car is prohibited during the summer, the ring road is used).

At the side of Caldera, there is the Christian Orthodox Cathedral of the Candlemass of the Lord, which was built sometime between 1963 and 1968. Opposite this church, you can come across “Mpounti” (a low wall), where visitors usually stop by in order to enjoy the magnificent view of the volcanoes. After that, you can walk along Ypapandis street, which is full of goldsmiths and other kinds of shops. In your way towards the Cable Car, follow the peripheral alley that offers a unique view of the volcano. In the area called “Frangomahalas” you will admire the big houses of the old Frankish families, the cultural centre “Megaro Gyzi” (17th century), the Catholic Cathedral, the Lazariston Monastery, the Monastery of Dominican Sisters and the Convent of The Adelfon tou Eleous (1841). At Nomikou street, you have the opportunity to admire the impressive building of the Convention Centre P. Nomikos. The restored Goulas (tower) of Fira is undoubtedly a distinguished spot.

“Kato Fira” is a beautiful and quiet neighbourhood that has been developed around the churches of Agios Ioannis and Agios Minas. From this point, one can admire the stunning –especially during the sunset- view to the volcano and the old mines, which are located at the exit of Fira towards the port.
